Cleaning Wood Floors with Ammonia Based Glass Cleaners like Windex

A better way to use Windex is to spray it onto a microfiber mop. You do not want to spray Windex directly onto your polyurethaned wood floor because you never want to have any standing liquid on your floor. Once you have spread it around, wipe it off until it is completely dry. You should not use any water at all. It should be straight Windex. For spot cleaning, instead of using a microfiber mop, use a soft sponge or some paper towel. This method is good for attracting dust and lifting film. Some people hand scrub their floors with Windex. It is effective but you will expend a lot of energy doing it. It is not very necessary.

Some people have permanently switched to Windex as their all-purpose floor cleaner. As long as it is done without any water, it is fine. However, it should only be used for removing filmy residue. You don’t want to always use an ammonia-based cleaner on your floors. It may eventually eat at your wood floor finish.
